New Signage for the
Elm Hill Historical Marker

Through a generous grant from the Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation, additional signage was purchased by Johnsburg Historical Society for the John Thurman/Elm Hill historical marker on South Johnsburg Road in the hamlet of Johnsburg. The blue and yellow cast iron marker notes the location of John Thurman’s industrial complex established in the late eighteenth century.

The new signage offers an expanded description of founder John Thurman and how the seeds of that original community took hold and became the unique place we know today as the Town of Johnsburg. The added sign describes Thurman’s vast holdings in the Adirondacks, his community of farmers and laborers, his historic calico printing mill, and his impact on the history of Johnsburg.

Crafted by Garnet Signs, the new marker is composed of high pressure laminate. Size is 24″ by 18″. JHS President Delbert Chambers installed the new sign on August 23, 2017.
